Welcome to the Suzanne Metz Art Gallery
My work reflects who I am. I have been working for over 20 years from the human form. My fascination with the figure extends from the rendering of form inspired by multiple means, whereby the final pieces are a combination of form, line and energy with emphasis on colour to express the emotional content within. By focusing on the torso, the pieces – for me – evoke power and strength. Most of my figures are androgynous as my focus is on the power they exert as a form rather than on what and who they are. For me, the human form encompasses all that I need to express to the world both visually and emotionally.
The majority of my pieces are drawn directly from live models. Recently, however, I have also begun to translate the works of photographers and sculptors whom I admire. My greatest inspirations have been the sculptures of both Michelangelo and Rodin and the drawings and paintings of Francis Bacon and William de Kooning.
My works on paper and canvas are multimedia, incorporating pencil, charcoal, pastels, acrylic, graphite, and any other dry media that may catch my eye. The earthy warm colours of my past history from South Africa have had a profound influence in my works. I have recently been adding a new element of collage, both in paper and fabric form, which has added a new dimension to my art. In addition, calligraphy – the art of the written word – plays an important role in my paintings. I read poetry, listen to all types of music, simply hear words that make a difference in my life, and I incorporate these thoughts into the paintings. The words are thereby not only immortalized in my work, but at the same time allow the mark of the written word to provide context to the art piece.
My playfulness and experimentation with new and exciting processes will always be a part of my work and therefore it will never lose its spontaneity and excitement. Painting is my passion, and I wish to share that passion with others. I put my heart and soul into each piece I create, and it is my hope that the paintings will touch the lives of many to come.
